Stray cats in Dubai

How Dubai Works to Improve the Welfare of Stray Cats

Although the number of stray cats in Dubai is high, the city does not leave the issue unattended. Both the authorities and local communities work continuously to improve the wellbeing of these animals.

The Role of Animal Welfare Organisations

Dubai has several rescue groups and volunteer‑run organisations.

They:

– carry out TNR work (trapping, neutering, returning)

– find homes for cats that are suitable for adoption

– provide temporary foster homes

– treat injured and sick cats

– educate residents about responsible animal care

Most of these organisations operate entirely on donations, and volunteers often pay expenses out of their own pockets. This explains why resources are limited and why not every request for help can be answered.

Many local rescues and volunteers spend enormous amounts of money on saving cats. One article mentions that some rescuers spend up to 300,000 dirhams (over €75,000) per year on veterinary bills, food, and care.

They carry out:several veterinary visits per day

-several veterinary visits per day

-treatment of injured cats

-paying for medications, sterilizations, and food out of their own pockets

This shows how much of the work rests on the shoulders of individual people.

In Dubai, there are private “cat villas” – homes that have been converted into sanctuaries.

One of the most well‑known examples is Dina Taji, who turned her entire rented villa into a shelter for cats. Her villa houses more than 400 cats and includes:

-play areas

-quiet sleeping spaces

-a small medical room for treatments

Why Not All Cats Can Be Taken Off the Streets

It is important to understand that Dubai cannot simply remove all cats from public areas. Reasons include:

– Cats reproduce quickly, and new litters appear constantly.

– Many cats are feral and cannot adapt to living as pets.

– The number of available adoptive and foster homes is limited.

– Removing all cats would cause ecological imbalance (for example, an increase in rats and cockroaches).

For these reasons, TNR is the internationally accepted and widely used solution in Dubai.

How Local Residents View Stray Cats

Attitudes vary, but in general:

– Many residents see cats as part of the community and feed them.

– Some residents prefer fewer cats for hygiene reasons.

– Most people accept the presence of cats as long as feeding is done cleanly and responsibly.

Dubai is a multicultural city, and people from different backgrounds have different views on animals. This diversity is reflected in how cats are perceived.

How to Support Cat Welfare Responsibly

Both visitors and new residents can help without causing unintended problems. Here are some responsible ways to contribute:

– Support local rescue groups with donations or supplies.

– Participate in TNR programmes if you live in Dubai long‑term.

– Feed cats only if you can do so regularly and keep the area clean.

– Avoid taking a cat home or to a vet without a plan — this may prevent it from returning to its territory.

– If you find an injured cat, act carefully and contact professionals.

Looking Ahead

Dubai continues to develop its animal welfare practices. In recent years, the city has seen:

– more TNR initiatives

– improved cooperation between authorities and volunteers

– increased awareness of the consequences of pet abandonment

– more education on responsible pet ownership

The long‑term goal is to reduce the number of stray cats humanely and in a controlled manner.

It is estimated that Abu Dhabi has up to 100,000 stray cats – and Dubai is not far behind.

One source suggests that Abu Dhabi alone is home to around 100,000 stray cats, while Dubai has “tens of thousands.” This shows the scale of the issue: it is not a matter of a few thousand animals, but a vast population.

some rescuers spend up to 300,000 dirhams per year to save cats that have been “dumped,” meaning abandoned on the streets.

In addition, authorities have warned that unregistered and unidentified cats may be confiscated and euthanised, which has increased pressure on owners to register their pets instead of abandoning them.

We are animal-loving people ourselves, so we bought a bag of cat candy at Christmas, which we gave to the cats passing by. It’s great to see how even a timid cat can become braver with the help of a human. Cats are wonderful, intelligent animals. Sometimes I wish I could adopt all the homeless cats in the world
