Adventures in Bangkok
So we have now arrived in Bangkok, Thailand – and wow, what a journey it was!
Dubai → Kunming → Bangkok
On January 10, 2026, at 10 a.m., we said goodbye to our hostel in Dubai and headed to Dubai International Airport. We waited there for 11 long hours until check-in finally opened – enough time to get to know every bench and cafe corner in the terminal. Our flight to Kunming, China departed at 8:45 p.m.
The plane had three rows side by side, each with three seats like a repeating mathematical formula. Luckily, we were served a free dinner, which tasted surprisingly good compared to the overpriced airport snacks we had been eyeing earlier.
We landed in Kunming at 6:45 a.m. The airport was similar in size to Helsinki-Vantaa, maybe a bit bigger. Outside, it was only seven degrees with a cold wind, and we were the only ones wearing sandals, locals looked at us as if we had wandered in from the tropics at the wrong season.
Kunming impressions
The Chinese people were friendly, but English was rare. The only person who spoke English was the woman at the check-in desk, who saved us from having to rely entirely on pantomime. Paying by card seemed unusual, every time we handed over our card, the shopkeepers examined it as if it were a piece of alien technology.
Bangkok calling

On January 11, 2026, at 6:30 p.m., we boarded our flight to Bangkok. Once again, a free lunch was served, clearly the airline knew how to keep passengers happy through food. We arrived at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport at 8:30 p.m. Passport control required us to show a digital entry card, and as a reminder: when entering Thailand, you must fill out a TDAC notification 3 days before arrival. (electronic arrival form), and when entering China, a separate arrival notification. Paperwork is part of the traveler’s life.

Hotel and everyday luxury
Our hotel is just two kilometers from the airport. Breakfast here is a daily feast: chicken, meat, rice, juice, coffee, bread, fried eggs, and endless snacks. And the best part, you can eat as much as you want. The hotel also has a swimming pool, We decided that if we swim every day, we’ll definitely stay in shape, and maybe balance out all the pastries we’ve been eating.
On the second day we had a massage and it cost a total of BHT 600, for two people. I also went to have my hair cut and colored the same day, BHT 1400, so yes, it is cheaper in Thailand than, for example, in Finland

Life in Bangkok
The journey from Dubai to Kunming to Bangkok has been full of waiting, surprises, and small cultural shocks. But these are exactly the moments that make the best memories: sandals in the cold, card payments as a mystery in China, and endless swims in the hotel pool. Bangkok now offers us warmth, flavors, and the lively buzz of markets – the perfect mix of everyday luxury and traveler’s adventure.

In Thailand, you should use the Grab app to book a taxi. It’s easy and safe, and you can pay in advance with a card or later with a cash for the driver.

We have used a taxi at least ten times. We have been to different markets, some of which are bigger and others smaller. We bought new clothes, shorts, shirts, pants and a new bag. One day we visited the park built in honor of the Queen of Thailand’s 60th birthday, where we saw lizards, land turtles and water turtles. One night we saw a snake in a tree behind the hotel. It was trying to catch the mouse. It was exciting.

On the 22nd, we were supposed to go by train to visit another city, where we will spend several weeks again until we continue our journey again. We will talk about that a little later.
